Logline

An empathetic historical portrait of a fascinating woman betrayed, portrayed by Hélène Florent.

Luigi Pirandello's short story "Such Is Life" is transposed to the town of Trois-Rivières in southern Québec in 1930. A woman who had been separated from her husband for eleven years takes him back after his mistress dies. He brings three daughters from that liaison with him, however, and expects his ex-wife to take care of them.

A RESPECTABLE WOMAN

Bernard Émond

Bernard Émond was born in Montréal, Canada, in 1951. After studying anthropology, he spent several years in the Canadian Arctic, where he worked for an Inuit television station. He began his film career by making documentaries, before turning to feature films in his native Québec. The first of these, LA FEMME QUI BOIT, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Semaine de la Critique. Émond is known for the humanistic and at times spiritual depth of his films, in particular a trilogy based on the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and charity (2007, 2009, and 2012). Émond describes himself as an agnostic and a "conservative socialist". UNE FEMME RESPECTABLE (2023) is his most recent feature film.
