Ole Giæver tells a haunting story of the marginalized Sámi people in Norway, in a poetic as well as universal ode to the gravity of one's cultural identity.
Summer 1979: like many Sámi back then, Ester conceals her ethnicity. Her cousin Mikkhal does the opposite. He takes her to a camp on the Alta River to protest the brutal discrimination against the Sámi. While she feels an ever greater sense of belonging, the clashes with police and politicians become increasingly violent. A struggle for survival ensues, forcing Ester to make an important decision.
