The documentary film HIGH RISE explores the social and cultural mindset of the Brazilian elite through dialogues with the owners of eight penthouses in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Recife. Permeating the film’s interviews, a poetic visual and sound narrative provides an evocative insight into the 'verticalization' of the Brazilian cityscape. This is a film about height, status and power and questions the elite in a way that has never been done before in Brazilian cinema. - The originality in Mascaro’s way of thinking and producing probably has to do with the fact that he arrived to filmmaking through contemporary visual art, documentary recording and urban installation. The industrial productions to be consumed on a large scale (cars) or (architectural) constructions in relation to the characters that inhabit or go through them are the motifs of interest in his cinematic work.
