Logline

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

Suffering from acute kidney failure, Uncle Boonmee has chosen to spend his final days surrounded by his loved ones in the countryside. Surprisingly, the ghost of his deceased wife appears to care for him, and his long lost son returns in a non-human form. Contemplating the reasons for his illness, Boonmee treks through the jungle with his family to a mysterious hilltop cave – the birthplace of his first life… "What also interests me are the processes of destruction and annilhilation of cultures and arts, In the past few years Thai nationalism, fueled by the military, has led to a confrontation of ideologies. There is now a government agency, a morality police that prohibits 'unsuitable' activities. The story of Uncle Boonmee must be seen in that context. He is a symbol for something that is vanishing, something that is being eaten away like old movie theaters, old acting techniques, things that the present no longer has a place for."
