And Everyone Was Silent
Based on Peter Wensierski's non-fiction bestseller "Beatings in the Name of the Lord," which dealt with the little-known fate of institutionalized children in postwar Germany, the film tells the story of Luisa and Paul.
Berlin, 2008. Luisa returns to Germany after more than 40 years in the U.S. to testify at a hearing of the German parliament on institutional child abuse.
In 1964, Luisa is a normal teenage girl who loves Elvis songs and sneaking the occasional cigarette but when her mother falls ill she is put in a home. She experiences the full cruelty of the system; she is abused both mentally and physically and is exploited as cheap labor. Her only ray of hope is Paul, the quiet boy who falls in love with her at first sight. But then they are separated.
Now, 44 years later, their paths cross again . . .
