The airship casts its long shadow over three generations of a southern German family: Why did Robert Silcher, crew member of the LZ 129 Hindenburg, die at Lakehurst on May 7, 1937? In order to complete the account his father set down in a notebook now mildewed and yellowed with age, Matthias Silcher begins researching the story of his grandfather, Robert, a member of the Hindenburg crew who died when the airship went up in flames.
