ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE

When Alice becomes a widow, she suddenly has to fend for herself and her 12-year-old son Tommy overnight. It’s quite a leap for her, since the only job she ever had was singer in a piano bar before she got married. So she sells her house and furniture, gets in her car with Tommy and sets out to start a new life elsewhere. In his only film centered around a female protagonist, Martin Scorsese tells a story of single parenthood and a mother-son relationship, without grand gestures or exaggerated self-sacrifice. Ellen Burstyn received the Academy Award as Best Actress for her portrayal of Alice.

The screening on June 27 will take place during the CineMerit Award ceremony for Ellen Burstyn.

Meet the director

ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE

Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese was born in Queens, New York City, in 1942. He grew up in Little Italy, which was to be the backdrop and inspiration for many of his later films. He had chronic asthma as a boy and couldn’t do sports or play outside a lot, so his parents took him to the movies a lot. He was fascinated by the moving image, and began drawing movies at home. His work was inspired the history of cinema and by international films. Films like TAXI DRIVER (1976), RAGING BULL (1980) und GOODFELLAS (1990) made Scorsese one of the leading directors alive today.
