From Kate Winslet to Checker Tobi – Munich International Film Festival at the Deutsches Theater

Tickets go on sale Friday, May 31, 2024!

Munich International Film Festival event series "An Evening with..." will transform the Deutsches Theater into one of the city's largest movie theaters this summer. From June 30 to July 2, audiences can look forward to four unforgettable events - with Checker Tobi, Jessica Lange, Natja Brunckhorst's "Two to One" and Kate Winslet. All eyes will be on exclusive film screenings, inspiring talks and glamorous CineMerit awards receptions.

An Afternoon with Checker Tobi – Movie Magic, June 30, 2024
This series of events starts off with a highlight for young viewers: On June 30 at 2 pm, an interactive stage show for the whole family will be held at the Deutsches Theater. Tobi Krell, aka Checker Tobi, will pull back the curtain on filmmaking as he reveals the tricks used in movie-making.

Checker Tobi will also welcome two filmmakers, Reza Memari and Maite Woköck, on stage to share exclusive details about the making of their animated film "The Last Whale Singer", which will be released to cinemas in 2025. That film tells the story of a teenage humpback whale who, with the help of an orca girl, must prevent a monster from destroying the oceans. At the show, the audience is invited to participate and ask questions.

An Evening with Jessica Lange – International Premiere of "The Great Lilian Hall" and CineMerit Award, June 30, 2024
As part of this year's Munich International Film Festival Oscar-, Tony- and Emmy-winning actress Jessica Lange will not only present a selection of her own photographic works at Deutsches Theatermuseum, but will also celebrate the international premiere of her new film "The Great Lillian Hall" at the Deutsches Theater.

As beloved Broadway star Lillian Hall (Jessica Lange) pours her heart, soul, and time into preparing for her next role, she finds herself blindsided by confusion and forgetfulness. Battling against all odds to make it to opening night while holding on to her fading memories and identity, she must navigate a tumultuous emotional journey: balancing her desire for the spotlight and the stark demands of the real world.

In addition to Jessica Lange, "The Great Lillian Hall" also stars Kathy Bates, Lily Rabe, Jesse Williams, and Pierce Brosnan.

An Extended FilmTalk with the Hollywood actress will accompany the screening. The event will culminate in the presentation of the CineMerit Award to Jessica Lange for her services to the art of film.

An Evening with "Two to One" – Grand audience premiere on the anniversary of the monetary union,  July 1, 2024
Munich International Film Festival
is delighted to celebrate the grand audience premiere of Natja Brunckhorst's East-West German summer comedy "Two to One" with a terrific cast including Sandra Hüller, Max Riemelt, and Ronald Zehrfeld.

The audience can look forward to an amusing and exciting evening with the director and cast in attendance.

We revisit the time leading up to reunification, the summer of 1990: Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt), and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) come across millions of East German marks in an old tunnel and decide to cheat the looming Western capitalist system. The three friends smuggle the money out in their backpacks and come up with a clever scheme to put the soon-to-be worthless money into circulation. But time is short: in just a few days, on July 1, 1990, the East German mark will be history.

On July 1, the anniversary of the monetary union, the screening will be followed by an Extended FilmTalk with director Natja Brunckhorst and lead actors Sandra Hüller and Ronald Zehrfeld.

An Evening with Kate Winslet – Exclusive European premiere of "Lee" and CineMerit Award, July 2, 2024
Oscar-winner Kate Winslet will personally introduce the European premiere of the film "Lee" (German title: "Die Fotografin"), which she produced, at the Deutsches Theater. She also appears in the title role of war photographer Lee Miller.

Lee Miller, once Man Ray's muse, emancipated herself by going from model to photographer. She took fashion photographs in bombed-out London for "Vogue" and struggled to be given the opportunity to report from the front. In May 1945, she documented the newly liberated Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps. Her terrifying images are an important record of the war that would haunt her for the rest of her life.

Winslet portrays a woman who was far ahead of her time and who left behind an extensive artistic and intellectual legacy. The film opens in cinemas across Germany on September 26, 2024. It stars Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Samberg, Josh O'Connor, and Alexander Skarsgård.
The premiere will be followed by an Extended FilmTalk with the Hollywood actress. The event will culminate in the presentation of the CineMerit Award to Kate Winslet for her services to the art of film.
