Kai S. Pieck is self-taught and began his film career at the end of the 1970s with short films on Super8. He was a founding member of the first Super8 cinema in West Germany in his hometown of Hanover. He started his career in the film industry when he first moved to Munich. He also helped to set up the Munich Film Festival as in the program management department from 1984.

Since the early 1990s, he has worked as a director and author for film/TV/streaming, events and stage. His feature films "Ein Leben lang kurze Hosen tragen" and "Ricky – normal war gestern" were screened at numerous festivals worldwide and received various nominations and awards.

He is currently finalizing a ZDFneo series he created with a diverse cast and crew. In 2018, he initiated the Queer Media Society, an initiative of queer media professionals to make queer content and people visible and represented in the media.
