Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life

The fifth cooperation with FILMFEST MÜNCHEN celebrates the cinematic and artistic underground cultures of New York in the 1980s. A curated film and video program at Museum Brandhorst and the FILMFEST MÜNCHEN cinemas shows the Big Apple from its unusual side and presents a wide variety of scenes and communities from changing perspectives - from nightclubs to the art world.

With “Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life,” Museum Brandhorst presents the world’s first comprehensive institutional exhibition dedicated to the two artists. The title of the show is borrowed from the motto of Keith Haring’s birthday celebrations: “Party of Life” tells of the cosmos of the 1980s, of MTV, discos, voguing, hip-hop, New Wave and graffiti. Within this context, the exhibition traces the two artists’ friendship. It reveals parallels in their artistic identity, their openness to cooperations and community projects, and their inclusive attitude: Art and its messages should reach as many people as possible.

From the first week of the exhibition "Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life", selected works by video artists Courtney Harmel and Tom Rubnitz will be presented in the Museum Brandhorst's media room. They allow visitors to immerse themselves in a decade of queer (club) culture, performance and friendship in New York's East Village in the 1980s. Video works such as Harmel's THE ANDY AND EDIE SHOW AT LIMELIGHT (1984) and THE MEGA-STAR BOOK SIGNING AT FIORUCCI (1985) or Rubnitz's MADE FOR TV (1984) and WIGSTOCK: THE MOVIE (1987) show a creative community in the vibrant center of New York between TV obsessions, nightlife and a smoldering AIDS epidemic.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on June 27 from 7 pm, you are cordially invited.

The exhibition can be visited from June 28, 2024 to January 26, 2025, admission costs 7 euros. The Museum Brandhorst is open daily (except Mondays) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Thursdays until 8 p.m.
