FILMTALK: CUBA — CINEMA AS AN ANTIDOTE TO CRISIS

Cuba is currently facing the greatest economic crisis in its history. When even basic commodities such as food and gasoline are scarce, how can there be room for something as elaborate as cinema? The island’s film industry, one of the most significant in Latin America since the 1960s, is now fighting for its very survival. The state’s cultural institutions are reacting to the country’s volatile economic situation by placing ever tighter restrictions on what is allowed to be filmed and shown. How are filmmakers managing to assert their freedom amid increasing government interference?

With Patricia Ramos (A NIGHT WITH THE ROLLING STONES) and Alán González (WILD WOMAN)
