FILM FESTIVALS – WHERE ARE YOU HEADING? A DISCUSSION ABOUT MONEY, ROLES AND THE FUTURE

The golden years appear to be over: film festivals, which were able to thrive for a long time, are now facing austerity measures, inflation, and a film industry undergoing radical changes. Furthermore, it’s often not that easy to find the next generation of festival directors and staff, as one has to be able – and willing – to afford the idealistic self-exploitation so common in the arts sector.

But aren’t festivals more important than ever in their function as discursive spaces just now, as the cohesive forces of our society are dwindling? And what future prospects and development opportunities are to be expected?
