A gently delivered debut film about the agony of change and the beauty of nature.
This quiet hamlet hidden in the mountains used to be a popular destination for hikers. But hardly anyone goes there anymore. Shige and his daughter-in-law Saki, who run an inn there, are feeling the effects of this. One day, Shige disappears and Saki, who is raising 12-year-old Ihika on her own, must ask herself if she wants to continue living like this.

Meet the director
Daichi Murase
Daichi Murase was born and raised in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. As a child, he loved to watch the American movies his father owned. Murase studied filmmaking at Kyoto University of the Arts. His short film FORGET BUT was screened at Cannes in 2019. His graduation film, ROLL (2020), earned the Audience Award in the student film category at the Nara International Film Festival. BEYOND THE FOG is his second feature-length film.
