New visions from Africa, Italian cinema today, an economy based on solidarity, and fighting discrimination — given the range of topics, the program (of supporting events) has something for everyone this year. We’re addressing topics on the pulse of time: from secrets of success in moviemaking, to the low-budget art of doing a lot with very little, to young political cinema.

Our CineMerit Award-winner Barbara Sukowa will take the podium to talk about her acting career and her work with such noted directors as Margarethe von Trotta, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Mary Harron. We will also look back on the career of Austrian director Jessica Hausner, to whom we are dedicating a retrospective.

Senta Berger received the CineMerit Award at Filmfest 2021. Now she’s returning for an in-depth Actors Talk. Berger is one of the most renowned and popular actresses in German-speaking countries. She has also lent her voice to various social and political causes for decades. In this conversation with Georg Seitz, she will discuss her career, her life, and how everything is connected.

A very special talk awaits you at Museum Brandhorst. Artist A. L. Steiner has curated a program of films and videos called URANIANS which celebrates, critiques, and exhibits queer and female-presenting sexuality on screen. At FILMMAKERS LIVE! URANIANS, A. L. Steiner will talk with artist and filmmaker Shu Lea Cheang, to whom we are paying homage this year, Bruce LaBruce, a director of cult underground films, and Jürgen Brüning, producer and founder of the Pornfilmfest Berlin.

Russian artist Gena Marvin, who lives in exile in Paris, will give a very unusual performance as a fascinating, self-designed character around Pavillon 333 in the arts district. This will be followed by a panel discussion titled DRAGTIVISM — A PERFORMANCE & TALK ABOUT QUEENDOM, in which director Agniia Galdanova will talk to Marvin about the performer’s drag art and the joint resistant film project QUEENDOM.
