An Evening with Tourmaline, Sasha Wortzel and Marsha P. Johnson

On October 22, 2024, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN and Museum Brandhorst will present a free screening of HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARSHA! (2018) in the foyer of the museum in the presence of the directors.

The joint short film by Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel is a moving homage to the famous Black trans* women's activist and performance artist Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992).

Interweaving archival footage and fictional scenes, the film begins on Johnson's birthday and imagines the trans* activist in the hours leading up to the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the two artists, moderated by Brandhorst curator Franziska Linhardt and Julia Weigl, artistic co-director of FILMFEST MÜNCHEN.

The event starts at 7 pm, admission is free.

To accompany the current exhibition “Andy Warhol & Keith Haring. Party of Life”, Museum Brandhorst is showing POLLINATOR and HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARSHA!, two cinematic works by contemporary artist Tourmaline under the title ”Tourmaline: Queering History”.

More information about the event on October 22 can be found here.
